Mission San Fernando Rey de España was built in modern day municipality of San Fernando in 1797 – about fifteen miles north of modern North Hollywood. Spaniard Gaspar de Portolà led an overland expedition in 1769 that set the stage for the subsequent Spanish Conquest. They established about twelve villages in the San Fernando Valley including the nearby Siutcanga and Cabuenga, to the west and east respectively. They were likely the ancestors of the Chumash people, whose homeland extended from the Central Coast at least as far south as San Clemente Island - the southernmost point in what’s today Los Angeles County.Īround 3,500 years, ago a Shoshone-speaking people arrived from the Sonoran Desert to the east, the Tongva, arrived in the region finding the inland mostly abandoned most likely after a long drought. ![]() ![]() The earliest known human inhabitants of Southern California were the Paleoamericans who arrived in the region at least as early as 13,000 years ago. Although at the time of writing North Hollywood has the fourth highest violent crime rate in the valley (after Panorama City, Van Nuys, and North Hills) it’s worth noting that its crime rate is consistently lower than those of Hollywood, East Hollywood or West Hollywood. ![]() Today North Hollywood is moderately diverse, home to a population that was, as of 2010, roughly 66% Latino of any race (primarily of Mexican and Salvadoran origin), 34% white Anglo (primarily Armenian), 6% Asian, and 3% black.
